INTERVIEW & SPOTLIGHT

Author Alison DeLuca

Currently Alison is wrestling with words and laundry in New Jersey. She was born in Arizona and has also lived in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Mexico, Ireland, and Spain. Alison DeLuca is the author of several steampunk and urban fantasy books.

Crown Phoenix Series Summary

An underground factory, a terrifying laboratory, and an Edwardian hospital...
Miriam has only her guardians' son for company, and she and Simon dislike each other from the start. But they must find a way to trust each other, or they will end up on the sinister Night Watchman Express.

Interview With Author Alison DeLuca

If you could work with any author, who would it be?
I love this question, since I can indulge in an author daydream! My fantasy would be to
work with Stephen King. Not only does he write slammin’ action and horror, he also
dissects literature with style. That man knows his craft, and his book On Writing is my
go-to guide. Plus, I love the fact that he’s been married for years and is such a family guy.
To get to work with him on anything would be wonderful.

Who is your favorite author and is your writing style similar to theirs?
I would have to choose Enid Blyton, a children’s author from the 40’s and 50’s. She was a
product of her times, but she could spin a tale of adventure like no one else. Her
characters were sometimes wooden and the dialogue a bit cliché, but her books
fascinated me as a child.
I can only hope to approach Enid’s sense of story and development. I do insist on
including ethnic characters, however, unlike her. So, I hope that I am a more modern
version of Enid.

What is your favorite part of a book?
Maps. I love maps. When I’m shopping for a book, if I see maps in the beginning, then I’m
a buyer. As a young reader I used to pour over Middle Earth, Narnia, Oz, and the
Hundred Acre Wood.
When I discovered the illustrator who developed the maps for my own books, I was
excited beyond belief. (It doesn’t take much.) To have the places that I envisioned
become visible was true magic.

When naming your characters, do you give any thought to the actual meaning?
Names have a certain aura, no doubt. I love heroines with old-fashioned names, such as
Hermione, so I chose a very classic name for mine: Miriam.
Some of my characters are ethnic, as I said, and they come from an imaginary land called
Lampala, which I based on Madeira. Manapalata Postulate is one example; she is my
magical governess who comes to teach Miriam. Her first name, Mana, was derived from
the Benin language. It is the same with the other characters from my dream country:
Chichilia, Wekogono, Kyoge…

What is your inspiration or who is?
My love of the Benin language came from the music of Angelique Kidjo. I discovered her
about ten years ago and listened to her songs again and again. She inspired my dream
country, its language, and the character of Mana.

Do you use real-life facts based on true stories?
My books are Edwardian steampunk fantasy, but of course I must base my technology in
the books on real-life engineering. In order to write about quantum physics and time travel,
I had to research those subjects within the parameters of Edwardian tech.
The final book in the series, for example, talks about bathyspheres. I researched them –
and their history is fascinating – so my book is based on those stories from the first
underwater explorers. However, I changed events a bit by making bathyspheres appear
twenty years earlier than they actually did, for the purposes of my story.

Do you use your OWN experiences?
I suppose I do. It’s a subconscious thing; I’ll see the way a child opens her mouth to cry,
or how my sister captures a spider and disposes of it, the way anger makes me feel as
though bubbles are exploding in my nose. Thousands of tiny details like that work their
way into my books.
On a macro level, I used my love of teaching to create Mana. Miriam’s anger and
tantrums were based on personal experiences as well, I’m sorry to say!

Did you ever think you would ever become an author?
Yes, as soon as I got a personal computer. I have dreadful handwriting, and I never
finished a book before my first Apple IIe because I could not bear the appearance of my scrawl on the page.
Computers changed all that; my Garamond script is quite lovely now, thank you!
How do you conceive your plot ideas?
I receive a sudden flash at the oddest, most inopportune moments. I can be stopped at a
red light and an idea will hit me.
As I write it and flesh out the story, the plot develops in my mind. It’s like watching a movie;
sometimes a character will do something quite unexpected and shock me.

Have you written a book you love that you have not been able to publish?
I’m an Indie, so I’m able to publish any books that I want, luckily! However, I do have a
few howlers hidden in my file cabinet, never to see the light of day. My very first novel, for
example, should be used to line birdcages. However, the thing showed me that I was able
to sit down and write an entire book. That is a true moment of revelation for an author.

How long did it take you to publish your first book, after you started trying?
A decade. The Amazon ABNA contest introduced me to wonderful, supportive authors.
With their love and help, I’ve been writing and publishing ever since. I owe them all so
very much.

Tell me about your book. How did you come up with that (story, angle, idea)?
The Crown Phoenix is a series of four books. The Night Watchman Express is the story of
an orphan, Miriam, who is undisciplined and very angry (much like Mistress Mary in The
Secret Garden.) Mana, her magical governess, teaches Miriam self-control and,
eventually, how to love.
There is also a bit of romance with the most unlikely person, Simon, who is the son of
Miriam’s guardians. Simon and Miriam really don’t like each other at all at first, but they
have to form a bond against some very nasty villains.
How did you get interested in writing this particular genre (historical novels,
mysteries, sci-fi, children's books, etc.)?
Steampunk has always fascinated me. I loved Doyle, Verne, and Wells when I was
growing up. The idea of having gears and clockworks perform feats of physics is
gorgeous, I think.

What kind of research did you do for this book?
I researched antique technology, such as those bathyspheres and typewriters. I also
continue to research Edwardian society and history. The final installment is set in an
Edwardian hospital, much like Downton Abbey, so I had to research medical history and
the development of nursing.

What is a typical working day like for you? When and where do you write? Do you
set a daily writing goal?
As soon as I get my daughter onto the school bus, I rush back to the house and write as
long as I can. Of course, I have to fight my way past the dishes and the laundry to do that!
I love it when I can get 2,000 words a day finished, but that doesn’t happen often, alas.
Still, each new sentence that I create is a concept that never existed before, and I get to
bring it to life. That makes my job the best there is.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?
Definitely having to interact with bookstore owners and do the hard sell. Like many
authors, I’m quiet and a bit shy by nature. I’m quite good at pouring words out on the page;
my challenge is doing the face-to-face thing.

What is the best thing about being an author?
I get to create new worlds and see the characters I love, every single day. That is
amazing.

What are you working on now?
The fourth and final book of The Crown Phoenix series is my WIP. It’s called The South Sea Bubble, and I’m almost finished with the first draft. Of course, that means that the
really hard stuff comes next – revisions, edits, beta reads, etc. Writing the book is the
easy part!

What advice would you give aspiring writers?
Buy yourselves On Writing and The Elements of Style. Butt+chair = written work, so sit
down every day and write at least 500 words. Read as much as you can. And, most
importantly, develop a good, thick skin. Harsh critique is extremely valuable – a poor
review can, if it is thoughtfully done, be a real gift.
Finally, be careful out there. Social media is a blessing and a curse for writers.

Do you have any favorite authors or favorite books?
I got sucked into Suzanne Collins’ series and couldn’t stop reading. I also love JK Rowling,
of course. The Age of Miracles was incredible. I love Murakami – Kafka on the Shore and
Hard-Boiled Wonderland – as well as Dwight Okita’s book, The Prospect of My Arrival.
11-22-63 is on my bedside table at the moment, as well as a host of others. I’ll read
anything from Bizarro (Placenta of Love) to Georgette Heyer. Got a book? Heck, I’ll read
it.

What question have you always wanted to be asked in an interview? How would
you answer that question?
I suppose I’d like to be asked: “How will you challenge yourself in your next book?”
I always like to continue my development as a writer. In my last book, The Lamplighter’s
Special, the entire book was from one point of view. Furthermore, the main character was
very near-sighted (as am I) and was too poor to afford glasses. To describe actions and
tell the story, keeping her fuzzy vision in mind throughout, was a lot of fun and a serious
challenge.
In my current book, I use two points of view. I’m considering different ways of presenting
those POV’s while keeping the story arcs intact, and I have a few concepts in mind. I can’t
wait to see how it turns out!

If you were writing a book about your life, what would the title be?
The Tale of A Bespectacled Swot. In school my glasses and lack of athletic ability were a
severe social handicap, let me tell you. Now I’ve learned to embrace my inner geek; in
fact, she is my muse – glasses and all.

SPOTLIGHT & INTERVIEW

AVA'S WISHES - By Karen Pokras

Genre - Romance
Sub Genre - Sweet Romance
Intended Audience - Adult

About Ava's Wishes

Ava Haines had big plans for her life. Her short-term golas included passing Statistics (on the third try), graduating college on time, and securing a job in the art gallery on Main Street. Her long-term goal was to one day own an art gallery of her very own. Oh sure, she would some day like to fall in love and get married, but all of that was secondary to making sure her other goals were in line. Fellow student Max Wallis and esteemed photographer Thomas Malloy were just minor distractions she was more than capable of handling. She was entitled to a little fun once in a while, right? However, as reality take a tumble, Ava begins to wonder if she really can manage it all. Will all her wishes come true?

About Karen Pokras

Karen Pokras writes adult contemporary and middle grade fiction under the names Karen Pokras and Karen Pokras Toz. Her books have won several awards including two Readers' Favorite Book Awards, the Grand Prize in the Purple Dragonfly Book Awards, as well as placing first for two Global E-Book Awards for Pre-Teen Literature. Karen is a member of the Society of the Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). For children, her books include the Nate Rocks series, Millicent Marie is Not My Name, and Pie and Other Brilliant Ideas. For adult readers, Karen's books include Chasing Invisible, and her newly released, Whispered Wishes series. A native of Connecticut, Karen now lives outside of Philadelphia with her family.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR KAREN POKRAS

Tell us about your latest release, Ava's Wishes - Book One in the Whispered Wishes Series.

Ava's Wishes is about a senior in college named Ava Haines. She's very ambitious and hopes to work in (and one day own) an art gallery after graduation. In order of importance, the things that matter most to Ava are her two sisters, her parents, her career goals, and her friends. Of lease importance on her list are guys. Of course all that changes when she meets two very interesting and very different men - Max Wallis and Thomas Malloy. In Book One, we follow Ava's path through her senior year to find out if all her wishes can come true.

What inspired you to write this book?

Originally, I started writing a book about three sisters, the oldest of whom was in her late thirties. That was Ava, and the book was called Woven Wishes. A few months into writing, my editor put a call out for romance short stories for an anthology. I got the idea to write the prequel to Woven Wishes, giving the back story of a young Ava in college. The story was just 10,000 words. In the end, I decided not to submit the short story, but instead, to turn that story into a full-length novel called Ava's Wishes. The stories that follow: Holly's Wishes and Tessa's Wishes, are each about Ava's younger sister and are also prequels of sorts to where they are in the final book Woven Wishes. The series then ends with the original story, Woven Wishes.

Are you working on Anything new?

I've got a lot going on at once. I'm in the middle of final edits for Holly's Wishes (releasing July 1st), I'm getting ready to send Tessa's Wishes out to my editor (releasing August 1st), I'm working on finishing touches for Woven Wishes (releasing this fall), and I've decided to add a holiday novella about one of the side characters called Merry Wishes (releasing December 2014). Plus, I"m getting ready to start working n a new Sci-Fi/Fantasy series novel with author Kristy K. James.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I've been writing for a few years now, but I only just recently started answering "I'm a writer" to people when they ask me what I do. It feels awesome to be able to say those words. I don't know why I finally decided it was okay to start calling myself a writer - nothing has really changed from when I first started writing. I guess, I finally felt both comfortable and proud of my accomplishments.

Do people judge a book by its cover? Who makes yours?

I absolutely think people judge books by their covers, and I adore mine! All of my Whispered Wishes covers were made by the fabulously talented Najla Qamber

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Not a writer! I honestly hated writing. I was a numbers geek - still am. My earliest career aspiration was to have my own variety show like Marie Osmond (dating myself). But since I could neither sing nor dance, I moved on to math teacher (because of the numbers thing), fashion merchandiser (because I thought I would get free designer clothes), and agent for The Securities Exchange Commission (to wipe out all the curruption on Wall Street after seeing the movie with the same name). I wound up doing none of those things.

Anything additional you want to share with the readers?

I'd just like to thank all the readers who buy indie.
Your support means everything to us!
THANK YOU!

GWR Sorrow's Point Tour

About the Author

Danielle DeVor spent her early years fantasizing about vampires and watching "Salem's Lot" way too many times. After living briefly in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, she moved back to her hometown to write. When Devor is not reading or writing (about weird things) you can find her hanging out at the nearest coffee shop, enjoying a mocha frappuccino.

About the Book

Not all exorcists are created equal- especially those that are "marked".
When defrocked ex-priest, Jimmy Holiday, agrees to help an old friend's sick daughter, Lucy, he unearths unexpected horrors. Blackmoor, his friend's new residence, has a dark history that makes it appear almost alive. Jimmy must decide if Lucy is only ill, or if the haunting of the house and her apparent possession are real.
After the house begins affecting him as well; seeing colors of magic and his voice taking on an unusual power, Jimmy discovers that he is apparently "marked". Whatever being "marked" means, Jimmy doesn't care. He wants to help Lucy. Helping Lucy means performing the exorcism.
Jimmy knows the ceremony, but it's belief that matters. And if a demon is using a little girl as a meatsuit, his faith had better be strong enough to kick it back to Hell. Otherwise, he might damn them both.

Excerpt 2:

Present

It all started with a phone call. To a lot of people, a phone call is a mundane thing, an everyday occurrence that, for the most part, has no bearing on your everyday life. But this phone call, it was something else entirely.
Here I was, sleeping in my bed, warm, relaxed, and then the phone rang. I looked at the clock—three a.m., the true witching hour. I blinked the sleep from my eyes and groaned. The phone rang again. Are you kidding me? I picked up the phone.
“Jimmy?” the voice asked.
I wiped my hand over my face to try to wake up. Who in the Hell is this? I sat up, pushing the covers off my legs. I turned and dangled them over the side of the bed. It hit me then. I recognized this voice. It was the voice of my past; someone I hadn’t heard from in years. This voice, after all this time, seemed somehow unchanged. “Will.”
I heard him breathing into the phone. He sounded distressed.
“I’m sorry for calling so late,” he said.
Why he was apologizing, I wasn’t sure. The deed had already been done. I’d be lucky to get back to sleep at all.
I heard him cough. “It’s about Lucy,” he said.
Now, I was confused, and honestly kind of irritated. He was calling, waking me up, for someone I didn’t even know. “Lucy who?”
“Lucy ... my daughter.”
I felt like someone had sucked all the air out of my lungs with a shop-vac. At one time, Will and I had been great friends. I didn’t even know he was married, but then, maybe he wasn’t. “I ... I didn’t know you had a daughter, Will.”
“Ah Hell.” I heard what sounded like him hitting the steering wheel with his hand. “Shit. Has it been that long?”
I rolled my eyes. Yes, you idiot, it’s been years. “Yes, it’s been that long.”
I heard him blow his nose. “Well,” he said. “I have a question.”
“Okay.”
“My daughter needs help, and I don’t know what to do.”
I wiped my eyes with the back of my hand, trying to wake up. “What’s going on, Will?”
He took a deep breath.
“Do you still believe?” he asked.
My eyebrows wrinkled together. They always did when I got confused about something. My mother used to comment on it all the time. It irritated the Hell out of me. But with Will, he wasn’t making any sense. “What are you talking about?”
“God. I’m talking about God.”
Now it was my turn for a breath. I hadn’t been asked that question for a long time. Ten years at least. “Yes, I still believe.”
Again, I could hear him take a breath. “Can I meet you somewhere?”
I sat up straighter. “Now?”
“Please, Jimmy. I know this is a lot to ask, but please.”
I rolled my head backwards towards the ceiling. I allowed my breath to escape, and my shoulders slumped. My chance at sleep was totally gone. “Where are you?”
“Sitting in your driveway.”
I jumped up and pulled back the curtain next to the bed. Sure enough, there he was sitting in my driveway in what looked to be a green Toyota 4Runner that had seen better days. I waved, let the curtain fall and hung up the phone.
It was damn creepy, and I didn’t like it. Something was wrong about this whole situation. Least of all, someone I hadn’t talked to in over ten years randomly showing up at my house in the middle of the night.
I dropped my phone on my bed. “Dammit.” Bed looked good right now, going downstairs didn’t. I left my bedroom, stumbling slightly. When I got downstairs, I turned on the hallway light and opened the door. He was standing there, blonde hair mussed, face white, hands shaking. What the Hell had happened to him?
“Come in,” I said.
He shuffled in and turned left, walking right into my living room. He narrowly avoided my pile of books and sat down in my old brown recliner. I shuffled my feet on the brown shag carpet then I sat opposite him on the sofa.
“I’m scared, Jimmy,” he said.
I shook my head. “I’m not trying to be mean, but what’s that got to do with me?”
He sat forward in the chair and looked me in the eyes. “I need a priest.”
I sighed. I should have known. “Okay. But I’m not a priest, Will.”
His eyes looked haunted, by what, I had no idea, but it was unsettling to see him this unhinged. “I know,” he said. “But they won’t listen to me, and Lucy needs one.”
I paused. This was just too weird. “Why do you think Lucy needs a priest?”
Will wiggled out of his coat and laid it on the floor beside the recliner. His arms were scratched so badly, it looked like he’d recently tangled with a lion.
“See what she did to me?” he asked. His eyes had taken on a crazed look. “Lucy needs a priest. She’s possessed.”
I sat back. You don’t randomly hear someone talk about possession every day. “Why do you say that?”
He looked at me, his face suddenly very serious. “Because she is.”

GWR: Devoted Tour Excerpt 1

Excerpt from "Devoted" by Katherine Polillo

"I stared down into the musty, dust-covered bouquet of artificial white roses.  It smelled vaguely of basement, and was slightly squished on one side.  I still couldn’t believe I was standing here and my stomach rolled with anxiety just to reiterate that fact.  What was I thinking?  My breathing sped and I felt a trickle of sweat roll down my back.  Actually I knew exactly how I got here, and I should have known he had ulterior motives.
We had been somewhere in Oklahoma driving though the beauty that was the grasslands of the Great Plains, enormous wind turbines slowly turning in the distance.  I found myself as infatuated with Gabriel’s beauty as I was with the scenery around us.  The top of the convertible was down and his dark curls blew wildly in the breeze.  He caught me staring and shot a heart-stopping smile back in my direction as he reached over to turn down the music playing from the radio.
“So I was thinking,” he began.
I interrupted because I never let the opportunity for a bad joke pass me by, “Aww you don’t have to do that, just look pretty.”
He rewarded my terrible joke with a flash of perfectly white teeth and a brilliant smile.  “No really, “ he continued.  “I was thinking that we drive past Colorado and Utah, and visit Vegas.”  He again turned to me eyebrows raised with question.
“I told Cami and my Mom we would be there to see them tomorrow.”  I racked my brain for the reason for his little change in plans.
“So call and tell them we’ll be a few more days,” he replied matter of fact with a shoulder shrug.
“Why Vegas?” I asked as I shifted in my seat.  I was going to have some serious tan lines from my shorts and the way the sun was beating down on the car.
“From what I hear, Vegas is like nothing else around.  I’ve seen a lot of the world, but I’ve never been to Vegas. “
The answer seemed simple enough, of course looking back; the dark sunglasses he wore made it difficult to read his face.  But I had given in, mostly because I never wanted to tell him no, but also because I liked the juxtaposition of a former Archangel in Sin City.
Now here I stood in cut off denim shorts, a white peasant top, flip-flops with feet covered in desert dust staring into a wedding bouquet.  If I didn’t stop my rapid breathing and hammering of my heart I was going to throw-up.  No one in their right mind did things like this.  I wasn’t an inebriated pop star or a Hilton sister, and I was stone cold sober.   At that moment something seemed terribly wrong with 18 not being old enough to drink in Vegas, but plenty old enough to get married.
Here I stood at the Little White Wedding Chapel with a sign out front boasting a 24 hour drive up window and the place where Michael Jordan and Joan Collins tied the knot, not to each other of course.  For the low-low price of $55 we were about to make it official.  Don’t get me wrong, I loved him and couldn’t picture a world without him in my life, but marriage at 18 seemed like a crazy idea.  So why than did I agree to this when he asked?  Honestly my heart spoke before my brain had a chance to chime in.  I wanted to spend the rest of my life with him, and yes I’m aware how many 18 year olds make that same proclamation, but to our defense we had a little more going on than your typical high school romance.   He and I had been through more together than most people would ever have to deal with, and he had taught me that I needn’t fight all my battles alone.  I wanted to make him mine forever, it was the getting from point a to point b that I was having a little trouble with." About The Author

Katherine Polillo originally planned to grow-up and become an archaeologist. Unfortunately, the desert air dried out her skin, the dirt was impossible to get from under her fingernails, and she just could not pull off a fedora like the iconic Harrison Ford character Indiana Jones. So - instead, she pursued a career in education. She courageously teaches high school history and special education. Which, from first hand experience I can contest, is not for the faint of heart.
In her free time she creates these fictional stories that has received numerous awards (listed below). She never really outgrew her imaginary friends stage, and instead has created lives and stories for the creations of her imagination to live in. When she is present in reality ad not off on an adventure with her imaginary friends, she lives in a small, New Jersey town with her husband, the man to which all fictional leading men are compared, and their two spoiled rotten, ungrateful cats.

GWR: Zaremba, or Love and the Rule of Law Excerpt

"Cell Phone"

"The thug had thrown the cell phone into the street half a block
down. Please don’t let it have been run over, she thought, please.
She arrived panting. It was there. It was lying in the street, a
little off the centerline. It hadn’t been run over yet. The traffic was
heavy here; how could she reach it? She waited impatiently for a break
in the cars. She was two lanes from it. It was sixteen feet away and she
couldn’t reach it. Every car that passed she marked the space between
the wheels and the phone. One foot, six inches, three. ‘The toad
beneath the harrow knows/where every separate tooth point goes.’
The cars were coming too fast. If she stepped out they wouldn’t stop in
time.
And now the phone was ringing – ringing as it lay in the street. It
must be Darek. Only Darek called her. There was a slight opening
between the cars. She leapt off the sidewalk, and swung towards the
centerline. The phone was there, she was dropping her crutch,
reaching for it, holding it up to her ear as the cars went by on either
side, horns shrieking. She couldn’t hear. A text message. She stared at
the screen: ‘this is ERA with a promotional offer for your cell phone
account…’ It was an advertisement. She had risked her life for an
advertisement."
