WRITING PROCESS BLOG TOUR

WHO NOMINATED ME:

Author Christy Santo
Pic captured via Google search
Christy Santo is the author of "Switching Stations, Switching Stories" that she self published in March 2014. Her testimony of when she knew she wanted to be an author captivated me. Christy knew from quite an early age that she wanted to be a writer. According to her site, when her mother typed up Christy's imaginative story of and elephant in New York and her seeing it go from "mind to printed word", she knew she was hooked! Check out Christy's Writing Process Blog Tour posting here

WHAT AM I WORKING ON NOW?

Currently, production is at a standstill. I completed the first draft of the second book in the Going off Dreams series a few months ago. Now, I have to go through and complete the initial edit and then have it sent for professional services. When I originally published Going off Dreams I didn't have the manuscript professionally edited before publication - which is a huge mistake. And now I am also considering other alternatives within the self publishing realms, such as professional book covers and marketing services. Part of the standstill is due to finances (I'm currently looking for a job) and the second is the dread I feel editing the manuscript for book two entitled For All in the Hope. I love the story, I just have a hard time going in and changing things.

Image captured via Google search - link

I have also been constructing the manuscript for a side-shoot series
explaining Arden's lineage and more back story of the different mythologies within the realms and character developments. Arduinna: Guardians of the Forests is still a work in progress (WIP) as I've only written a handful of chapters. After completing a pretty dark scene I decided to take a small break to regroup and work on character and plot developments more. I am really excited about what is to come though!

HOW DOES MY WORK DIFFER FROM OTHERS IN ITS GENRE?

I'm pretty sure I should pimp out my genre and get into how my plots are unique. Honestly, I don't really know that they are. I mean - they are to me and I love them. I love reading about different mythologies and how they could relate in today's world. However, in the Going off Dreams realms the mythologies (as of right now) stay out of the Earthly realm. Instead, they take individuals from our realm to theirs.

When researching different mythologies, I kept running into similar stories. I enjoyed taking the puzzle pieces and developing the realms and plots. It's become so much more than what I had originally thought. I feel like I am just the conduit of a bigger story about to explode. I also incorporate different Biblical story plots as well. I remember reading the Bible and the messages, characters and stories just sticking with me. Again, they are testimonies that we can relate to even today.

What I love about my genre(s) are that they give you the tools to escape our realities. And really, that's what the story is about - escaping to a world with more possibilities. It divulges in sensual desires, so it's definitely for a mature reader. Going off Dreams also deals with many stressful and intense situations and much like life, with the not so good times, there are great times too with plenty of playful banter.

WHY DO I WRITE WHAT I DO?

When I first started writing the story, I had an initial dream about an apocalyptic nature and wanted to write about it. I didn't write the dream exactly as it had occurred, but I took aspects of the dream and manipulated them. I really enjoyed the character development, and took what I read and worked it into the grand scheme of things. As I researched more, I kept diving deeper and deeper into the Mythical and Biblical worlds.

Why? Because I write what I would want to read. Of course being the naive first-time self published author, I thought the book would take off. But the realization that it takes a lot more work than just writing, editing, and publishing it. That is probably about 20 to 30% of the self-publishing aspect. The other percentile is building, marketing and advertising your work and yourself. I really believed that I could make the income from the first book to sustain and to continue to produce the rest of the series (and possibly more). However, this hasn't been the case - especially since life tends to get in the way of things from time to time.

I've had a couple people that think it's great that originally I had this ambitious thought that one day my characters would be or could be portrayed at such events like Comic Con. One of my motivations was to continue the stories because I wanted to see my characters come to life (not just in my head). I still have this hope.

HOW DOES MY WRITING PROCESS WORK?

This is assuming that I actually have a writing process... and we all know what assume really stands for - just kidding! My writing process as I've mentioned previously starts by researching different mythologies. I'll have definite things that I want to include in the initial plots, I'll keep them in mind when researching mythologies and different perspectives within the characters. Then I'll write the scenes and work on the progressions. After the first manuscript is written, I have beta readers read the first rough draft and give me their input. I then begin the first hard edit taking their suggestions into consideration.

After I originally published Going off Dreams I realized there were A LOT of mistakes. So then we paid to have it professionally edited. I utilized this time as well to coordinate the talents of others to help me relaunch including a new cover. I also made the book trailers with Microsoft Movie Maker with the aide of Its A Family Affair Productions (music) and Rt. (Route) 77 Productions (photography). I have already learned so much and can now implement this for the rest of the series and any other works.

During the process I write a lot of notes, mostly I keep them in a word.doc where I can cut and paste. I have also started to save pictures that help to motivate or work as a muse or inspiration toward the characters, landscapes or such. I frequently check back within my notes. This is where I will keep bullets of what I need to include, thoughts that I've had, and even the research that I've gathered. The notes that I have for the first book I went through so many different names. Originally Xylo's name was Katherine because I had read somewhere the association with wood. But then when researching and learning new details, I read where Xylo was a reference to wood and had to listen to how it was pronounced and thought it would make an interesting name. Originally Katherine became Katheryn, the main protagonist, but she is referred to as Eryn. In the series Eryn is transformed into the goddess Nyx - which I always knew I wanted to use. Her main love interests when through a lot of different names. I tried using regular names and they weren't working. Originally Eryn was going to be married and her husband's name was Alex. That was rewritten as her younger sister was engaged to be married to Alex. Within the alternative realm, originally Eryn was suppose to fall in love with Paul - but it wasn't working and through a lot of research I finally felt that Tobar was unique enough to suit him. Name developments were fun for me because I would look up names based on characteristics of the particular character. With the internet at your finger tips the possibilities are unlimited.

Image captured via Google search - link

Sometimes music will inspire me to write as well, I did post about my Audioinspirations. Usually I try to write in a more secluded place, where I can escape and really focus on what I am writing so I can relate the different experiences and senses. I usually will listen to the music when editing, this helps me in a couple different ways. It might sound foreign to some people, but when I listen to music I can process editing more efficiently (I think), it's like I can stay out of my head more. Or, I use the song to help me reach a certain feeling or sense that I can further develop the writing. There have been times when I have been writing for hours and don't even realize it. When I've come out of the 'writing coma' I realize the time.
Usually part of my writing process is more just getting the thoughts out. A very rough patch of what's going on in my head or where I want the story to go. Then, I will go through and pick at it, rearrange, cut and paste, read and reread it again and again until it feels right. Especially with intense scenes, I tend to just run through it and then when I would reread it, it felt patchy and I wasn't portraying a complete picture. I really would try to take certain scenes too and try to write in detail about different senses, in an attempt to make the reader feel like they are there and personalizing the story and experiences for them. I really want the reader to invest within the realms and characters because I love them and I want readers to love my characters too.

What I am going to implement with the next book, to include in my writing process, is professional editing services; I really want to try to find one editor that can continue within the series so they get a better grasp and could benefit the stories in a more professional way. This time around too, it was suggested to invest in a professional book cover, marketing, and advertising strategies.

TOUR-EXCERPT

Like many a night, he found himself gazing up at her window. Warmth radiated from it. She would be in a chemise, the thin material moulding to her breasts. Unbound hair likely spiralled over her shoulders. Mayhap she had washed and her skin remained dewy and ebony curls clung to her face. A shudder swept through him and his blood boiled. He gripped the pommel of his sword. Lord, give me strength.
A movement sent his heart into his throat. His jaw dropped as Katelyn leaned out of the window. Sure enough, white cotton hugged her arms and her hair hung loose. Candlelight surrounded her in a fuzzy halo like an angel. She gazed out into the night, entrancing him. How he longed to know what she was thinking.
Did she think of him?
Her gaze snapped down, locking onto him. He peered around, realising the torchlight on the walls revealed him. Breath imprisoned in his throat, he met her challenge. Stance strong, chin lifted, he stared her out, waiting for her to crumble and retreat. The air around him became cloying and thick while his pulse pounded sickeningly. His arousal grew painful.
Abruptly, she turned away, broke the connection and left him panting and weak. He dropped his shoulders. Damnation. A moment to relieve himself was called for. Should he return to his chambers or just suffer it, like some kind of penance for a desire he should not have?
Swivelling, he stomped down the steps into the courtyard. He paused and gritted his teeth. Time alone would not cure him of her. And wine held no appeal any longer. He was lost.
The hall doors opened and a figure came barrelling out. He nearly cursed aloud when he realised it was Katelyn. Her chemise flowed around her legs, barely covered by a thin robe. He noted her bare feet and cursed properly this time. What was the lass doing outside in such a state?
Before he managed to ask her as much, she flung her arms around him and flattened a desperate kiss to his lips. He caught on quickly. With a growl, he bundled her to him, shaking hands splayed over her back and in her hair.
“Hell fire, Katie,” he murmured as he took another kiss from her. Breaking away, he glanced around and shook his head. “What are ye doing? Anyone could see. Gillean could see.”
“I care not,” she whispered.
When she leaned up for a kiss, he released her, snatched an arm and dragged her over to the stables. One more frantic glance around and he shoved her into the doorway and pressed her against the wall. No candlelight greeted them here, only the glow from the torches outside permeated the building, slipping through the gaps between the wood. It was enough. He saw all he needed. Once more he speared his fingers under her hair, unable to resist those glossy lips, slick from his kisses. Katelyn whimpered when he captured her mouth and curled her fingernails into his back.
“Ye play a dangerous game, lass,” he muttered against her mouth.
She tugged against the hold he had on her hair and eyed him. “I am no’ afeared of Gillean.”
“Ye are, ye cannae lie to me. But I mean with me. Ye play with fire here.”
“I need ye, Finn. I am no’ afeared of ye either. I’m willing to risk getting burned.”
“Ach, we shall both be burned. No good shall come of this.” His chest heaved at the enormity of it all, at what she said. He’d always known he was secretly weak. His bold endeavours and brash behaviour covered his fears. When others saw a warrior, Katelyn saw him for who he was. Weak for her.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

Seventeen year old Aqua Vickers lives a secluded life in the English countryside. She keeps herself that way, hiding in plain sight, out of fear. She has no idea where she came from or what she is, she just knows she isn't human. Her mother is convinced she's an angel, but does having wings make you an angel? Sharp, angular and intimidating black wings?

The only other person Aqua has let into her life is Aaron, her best friend. They've grown up together, shared every milestone and Aqua's feelings for him have developed into something more. In a moment of impulse, Aqua reveals her true nature. Aaron freaks, hurting Aqua so badly that she flees into the night.

Lucas has been watching and waiting. As an Angeli Tail it is his job to be a spy; and he's been ordered to watch Aqua. Lost and vulnerable above the clouds, Aqua is reaching exhaustion. When Lucas offers her the answers she seeks, she follows him impulsively.

In a city, carved into the rock of a mountain, Aqua discovers she's not as alone as she thought; and her life has been rooted on a bed of lies and deception. In her absence, her home is attacked and her mother taken. With this new enemy intent on her capture and new family who aren't all welcoming, Aqua must integrate and train with the Angeli Guard if she has any hope of rescuing her mother from the hands of the Dragone.

The Angeli Guard Master is unforgiving and ruthless, allowing Aqua little rest from his relentless and painful training exercises. Aqua can barely stand to look at him, but can't seem to exterminate the butterflies she feels when he's around.

War is coming but Aqua's battles may need to be fought closer to home.

TOUR-EXCERPT

I run for the car. The mass of people is dense and I keep bumping into dancers, drunkards and idiots – slowing my escape. A pair of hands grab my waist, and I think it’s Aaron.
“Where’d you think you’re going?” a slimy voice slurs.
It’s not Aaron. It’s the perverted creep from earlier with the taking what I’m offering comment. I spin to face him.
“Let go of me,” I seethe.
He sneers. “Oh come on gorgeous. I just want to see what you’re hiding under there.”
Without warning his grubby hands land slap bang on my cleavage. Jerk! I react instinctively, without thinking I pull my arm back and let my fist fly. It lands with a crunch on the moron’s jaw. There’s a sickening crack but that’s not the worst part. He takes off. His feet literally leave the floor as he shoots backwards and lands on his butt ten feet away.
The kids around us fall silent and stare. The guy’s sprawled out, he’s not moving but I know he’s not dead because he’s making a kind of gurgling noise. Someone rolls him onto his side but no one else tries to help him. They’re all too busy gawking at me; standing with my feet apart and my hands in fists by my side, my shoulders rising with my heavy breathing.
Aaron comes rushing out of the mass then and takes in the scene. I hate to do it to him twice in one night but I turn and run again. This time he follows.
“Aqua! Wait. Stop, please!” I hear his voice but keep running. Tears are falling now. I’m actually crying. How humiliating.
I have to control my pace. I can run inhumanly fast, it would draw even more attention. I misjudge it, maybe deliberately, and Aaron catches me by the wrist before I get to my car.
I glance behind. We’ve run a long way. There’s no one else here; the party’s in the distance, illuminated by the glowing bonfire.
I stop, still facing away from him. He keeps hold of my wrist. “What happened?” he asks, concern evident in his voice.
I swipe at the tears marring my cheek. “He groped me. I punched him.” I’m still sobbing but trying my hardest to hide it. “Maybe I hit him a bit hard.”
“A bit hard? He looked comatose!” He almost sounds proud. “Are you alright? Did he hurt you?”
“I’m fine, not hurt.”
I turn then.
He takes me in, in all my tear-streaked glory. I bet I look hideous.
“Aqua... why did you run?” He asks it softly, watching me with veiled eyes.
I know we’re not talking about the punch now. I don’t want this conversation though. “Did you see the guy? I could get eight to ten.” I mean it to sound light-hearted but it comes out sombre.
He flashes his dimple. “No. Before, after I kissed you. Why did you run?”

TOUR-EXCERPT

He wanted to say something but suddenly became hesitant. Everything had gone so fast, he didn’t want to spook her. He was unafraid to show her how much he loved being with her, especially since she’d promised to visit him in Coronado and they’d see where things went from there. It would have been like the cart before the horse, but he wanted to ask her to marry him at that impulsive moment, but he held himself back. Being the wife of a SEAL was a special assignment and there was no training for that, except the school of hard knocks. There was a community of wives that looked out for each other. And not all the stories from overseas made it home to them. The smart wives knew this. He knew it was a lot to ask of someone. He didn’t want to fall for a lady who didn’t really understand what she’d be getting herself into. But that was a completely crazy thought, because he’d already fallen for her. He decided he’d just put it out of his mind, and not discuss anything future-related, to keep the pressure off them both. Nothing wrong with having a little bit of—well, a lot of—fun in the next few
days before his deployment. He held her under the starlight. Feeling eyes on him, he saw Julie’s parents eyeing him from their kitchen window, smiling. He couldn’t keep up the eye contact because odds weren’t in his favor. He wasn’t prince charming, or Sir Galahad riding in on his white horse. He was just a guy other guys sent in to blow stuff up, grab people and hopefully get out before getting shot or caught. And his intentions, although he liked to think of them as honorable, were merely to do everything in his power to be as irresistible as possible to her so that when he left, he’d be the one hard to miss. And then maybe she’d wait for him. Maybe she’d wait until he got fully well. It was a lot of ifs. The music stopped while he was kissing her ear through her hair, while he was holding her tighter as she melted into him. He liked that they were dancing because their thighs made soft caresses and the dress, that yummy dress, made all that noise. He just knew every time he heard the sound of layers of chiffon, he’d get hard. It was going to be something he’d have for the rest of his life.

TOUR-EXCERPT

(18+ Excerpt)

I stand up slowly and begin to fight what I’m about to do. I beg myself to sit down, look away, anything, but instead I trail up to her. She doesn’t flinch, doesn't shudder; strangely, her eyes stay locked onto mine. I take the extra towel from her and draw her body to mine. I hear her left out a small gasp, and I can tell her heart rate has quickened. I bring a hand to her face, letting it trail from her cheek to her neck, all the way to the back of her head. I pull her in for a kiss. A proper one. That feeling I felt before returns as something inside me nearly loses control. My legs begin to feel weak as I realize that she’s kissing me back. It’s as soon as my tongue flickers over hers that I really feel I may lose it. I pull away for a moment and close my eyes. “This is how it’s supposed to be,” I mumble to her. I work to keep myself under control, I remind myself to keep a slower pace, not to rush. I catch a sudden wave of Red’s
feelings…the want and need is there, and it makes it more difficult to control myself. I try to relax, remind myself to pace myself but when Red pushes her body into mine, I fully lose any control that I had. Her arms fly around my neck and I do nothing to stop her. Her lips find mine as her hands reach for my belt buckle. She wastes no time in unbuckling and unzipping my jeans. I reach for the last towel and yank it from her body as she pulls my tee shirt off and throws it across the room. She wraps her arms around me again and lets her lips find mine as I wrap my arms around her, lifting her in one swift movement. Her legs immediately cinch around my waist and I steady myself quickly as I push her against the nearest wall. She moans loudly and I feel her nails dig into my back briefly. I begin biting tenderly down her neck in a way that leaves tiny little marks but enough to make her groan with pleasure. I feel all self-control leave my body as I steady her against the wall and begin using my strength to lift her upwards as I move my mouth down her body. I feel her hands tug at my hair as I clamp my teeth down on one of her nipples. She releases another moan and I feel her breathing become choppy as I work my way down her core; kissing, biting, licking, and unable to control myself. I finally find myself in a squat position, I quickly adjust Red’s over my shoulders and I feel her shake. Everything in me wants to have her, every single piece of her right this minute. I need her. Not to just satisfy the raw animal craving that his built up inside me, but because I need every piece of the one thing that I ever wanted and needed so badly. I slow my kisses past her belly button and move to her inner thighs. I look up at her and her eyes catch my gaze. She’s breathing heavily, her legs begin to tremble more as I steady her against the wall as I drop to my knees to maintain my own balance. When my mouth finally latches to her, letting my tongue do the work for me, she releases a noise filled with such intense pleasure that there’s no going back. I need her even more now.
